Method of Instruction

The course covers Search and Rescue operations in the Himalayas with particular reference to Rescue techniques on rock, snow and ice, First-aid, Mountain Navigation, Radio Telephony, Liaison with various organizations and their involvement during Rescue operations, Audio and Visual communication Signals and evacuation methods including use of helicopters.

Day by Day Schedule

Day beforeArrival, Reception and Hostel Formalities.
Day 1 – 6Tenzing Rock & HMI Campus.   Physical training/Yoga Distribution of Ropes, Adm & Joining Instruction, Visit to HMI Campus and Museum, Opening Address, Issue of Equipment, Medical Inspection, Self Introduction of trainee, Introductory lecture on MOI, Lesson Plan, Mountain Hazards, Map Reading & GPS, Mountain Terminology, Himalayas, Principles of rock Climbing, Holds, Bouldering, Chimney climbing, Anchoring, Belaying, Rappelling, coiling of ropes, rope knots. Tent, Pandam Trek (Physical Fitness Test), Meteorology, Etrier climbing, Effect of High Altitude, First Aid, Handling of various types of casualties. Exchange of Equipment, Sport Climbing, Rope knots practice, Briefing on purchase of necessary items for the mountain, deposit of personal valuable items, Training Film.
Day 7Move to Yuksum – 1850 Mtr, West Sikkim. Deposition of Leftover Items at Hostel/Cashier, Loading of Rucksack on vehicles, Move to Yuksum by vehicles, stay at Yuksum.
Day 8 – 9Move to Tshoka – 10000 Ft Approx.  Trek to Tshoka, Establishment of Camp, Acclimatisation walk up to 11000 Ft, Camp Hygiene & Sanitation
Day 10Move to Dzongri – 13220 Ft.   Trek to Dzongri, Establishment of Camp and Acclimatisation walk to Dzongri Top – Dablagang.
Day 11Move to Base Camp.    Trek to Base Camp (Chowrikhang-14600 Ft)
Day 12 – 17Stay at Base Camp Chowrikhang – 14600 Ft.     Acclimatization walk, lecture on Surrounding Peaks, Co-ordination of Ice Axe and Fitting of Crampons, Issue of Central equipment, Glacier Travel and Ice Climbing Practice, Anchor Base – Ice and Snow, Glacier, Jumar Climbing, Fixed Rope, Self Arrest, Crevasse Rescue, Revision of Fixed Rope, Crevasse Rescue, Ice Climbing and anchor base test, field cooking and uses of different cooking stove, Map reading exercise, Ladder Launching, Aid Climbing, Suspension & Tyrolean traverse, All Lecture Practice.
Day 18Trek back to Tshoka – Establishment of Camp.
Day 19Trek back to Yuksum – Lunch at Yuksum and move to HMI by vehicle.
Day 20Lecture Practice, Preparation of Lesson Plan, Equipment Return
Day 21Lecture Practice, Lesson Plan Submission, Final Lecture, Graduation Ceremony
Day 22Final Lecture, Principal’s Interview.
