INAUGURATION OF CHORTEN IN MEMORY OF LATE NAWANG GOMBU AT HMI CAMPUS ON 24 APRIL 2017.

This Chorten is dedicated to the memory of Late Shri Nawang Gombu, a world-renowned Sherpa mountaineer who was the first man to scale Mt Everest twice. Gombu spent a lifetime guiding and teaching at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and served the Institute after retirement as an advisor. He also became the most decorated mountaineer of his time with medals like Tiger’s Medal, Padma Shree, Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award, The Queen of England’s Coronation medal, Olympic Gold Medal and Hubbard Medal of the National Geographic Society. Gombu was a  devoutly religious man, committed to the development of the Sherpa community. Gombu is remembered as much for his warmth and humility that won him lasting friendships, as for his contribution to mountaineering.
